Start with Model 3 for a lower, smaller saloon or Model Y for a higher driving position and easier luggage access. Model Y L adds six seats; Model S and X are the larger premium models, while Cybertruck is a full-size pickup. Check the exact generation and trim, then plan charging around where you stay.

You know the badge, the giant screen and probably the Cybertruck. But is a Model Y just a taller Model 3? Is a Model S newer than a Model 3? And does "Long Range" tell you which car you are looking at?

The simplest way in: 3 and Y are the everyday pair; S and X are the larger premium pair; Cybertruck is something else entirely. Then come the versions, the model-year changes and the cars Tesla is building next. Here is how to make sense of them before renting or buying in the UAE.

01The Tesla lineup at a glance

02"Current" means two different things in 2026

A model still being built somewhere in the world and a car you can order in the UAE are not the same thing. For a new-car shortlist, start with Tesla's UAE Model 3 and Model Y pages, including the Model Y L on the UAE range page. Cybertruck now has an official UAE ordering and delivery process too. Cybertruck UAE ordering · Model Y UAE range.

Model S and Model X now belong in a different column: remaining inventory, used cars and rentals. Tesla's July 2026 update says their production lines were decommissioned, while the UAE product pages direct visitors to inventory. A car can still be an appealing rental after production ends. 03Model 3: the clearest starting point

Refreshed Tesla Model 3 with narrow headlights

Choose the 3 because you want a car, not because you need an SUV. It is a five-seat saloon with a conventional boot opening, a low seating position and one central screen doing most of the work. A couple exploring Dubai or a resident trying electric commuting can start here without paying for space they do not need.

Against the Model Y, the real question is not which badge is better. It is whether you prefer sitting lower and having a less bulky car, or loading a taller boot through a large hatch. Take your actual suitcase or pushchair into that comparison. The Y's opening can matter more than a luggage-volume number.

The UAE range uses names such as Standard, Premium and Performance alongside drivetrain choices. Start with the everyday version, then decide whether extra range or sharper performance is worth the upgrade. Explore Model 3 in the UAE.

04Model Y: the one to compare for family life

The Model Y takes the everyday Tesla idea and makes it taller and easier to load. A hatchback-style tailgate, a higher seating position and a more upright cabin are the reasons to choose it over a Model 3. Think school bags, a supermarket run and luggage for a night away, rather than simply "the more expensive Tesla".

For a family renting in Dubai, I would compare a regular Y first. It gives you a useful baseline before stepping up to a larger Model X. Bring the child seats into the decision: ease of buckling a child in can be more important than acceleration.

The refreshed Y arrived in 2025, often called "Juniper" in listings and videos. It has distinctive lighting and a revised cabin. Meet the refreshed Model Y.

Model Y L: not just another battery upgrade

The L is the six-seat, longer-wheelbase version. Its second row has two separate seats, followed by two more in the third row. That makes it a different layout, not a synonym for "Long Range". If six people need to travel, compare the L with a six-seat X, then look at the luggage space with everyone aboard. Tesla's Model Y / Y L manual.

For a first rental, I would put a Model 3 and Model Y side by side before thinking about Performance. The difference you use all day is the seating position and the space, not the quickest acceleration figure.

05Model S: the electric grand-tourer idea

Model S is the big, low Tesla. It looks like a saloon, but the rear glass rises with the tailgate, giving it a much larger loading opening. It suits someone drawn to a long, spacious car rather than an SUV.

The famous badge here is Plaid, the high-performance version. You do not need Plaid to understand why an S appeals: the body style and cabin are already the point. For a rental, it can be a more interesting choice than moving automatically from Model 3 to an SUV. Model S specifications and inventory.

06Model X: space, presence and those doors

Model X is Tesla's large SUV, best known for its Falcon Wing rear doors. It has more theatre than a Model Y: the doors, the large windscreen and the sheer presence make it a different kind of rental.

Ask for the seating configuration before booking. Five, six and seven seats appear across the model's configurations, while Plaid is a six-seater. Separate second-row seats and a bench create different experiences for families. Also try the third row with the people who will actually sit there. Model X configurations.

For a hotel weekend or a family occasion, that sense of occasion may be exactly the reason to choose it. For an apartment's tight parking space, the simpler Model Y deserves a look first.

07Cybertruck: you are renting the experience

Stainless-steel Cybertruck in the DEIZ showroom

Cybertruck is a five-seat pickup with an angular stainless-steel body and a cargo bed. It is not a bigger Model Y. The appeal is obvious if you want the drive, arrival and photographs to be part of a Dubai weekend.

The practical difference is its footprint. Before choosing it for a longer stay, think about your building's ramp, parking bay and the places you visit every day. For a short rental, ask the supplier to demonstrate the controls and parking cameras before the handover ends.

Tesla has an official UAE Cybertruck sales channel, but rental stock can also include imported vehicles. Ask which specification the actual truck is and have its charging connector and supplied adapters demonstrated. Tesla's UAE Cybertruck FAQ.

08RWD, Long Range, Performance: reading the whole name

"Model 3" tells you the car family. The words after it tell you the version. A Model 3 Long Range and a Model Y Long Range are two different cars. Long Range does not identify the shape.

Rental ads may shorten those names. Ask for the exact version shown in the car's information screen if the distinction matters to your booking. Compare with Tesla's current Model 3 range and Model Y range.

09Same model name, different car: spotting the older versions

  • Model 3: the earlier car has larger, rounder headlights; the 2023/24 refresh, commonly called Highland, has slimmer lamps and a revised interior. Tesla separates its manuals into generations, including Model 3 2024+. Ask for interior photographs as well as the front of the car.
  • Model Y: the 2025 refresh is the easy visual one: the light-bar-style front replaces the earlier separate headlamp look. "Juniper" is the nickname you will see in searches. A listing that says 2025 alone is not enough to identify the shape. Tesla's refreshed Y.
  • Model S / X: older cars have a portrait-oriented main screen; the refreshed generation uses a landscape screen. Tesla's 2012-2020 Model S guide is separate from its later-car material. Older badges such as 75D and 100D belong to that earlier naming system.

For a used purchase, go further than the headlights: inspect the VIN and original market, accident and repair history, remaining warranty, charging compatibility and battery condition. For a rental, focus on the cabin, seat count, range for your itinerary and exact car supplied. A newer registration date does not turn an older design into a refreshed model.

10What is next, and what has already arrived?

Roadster: the sports car still in development

The next-generation Roadster is Tesla's announced four-seat sports-car project. It is separate from the original two-seat Roadster that launched the brand. Tesla's July 2026 production table still categorised the new Roadster as design development. It belongs on a watchlist, not alongside UAE cars ready for your next weekend. Cybercab: a taxi, not your next self-drive rental

Cybercab is the two-seat autonomous taxi with no conventional steering wheel or pedals. It is no longer simply a reveal-stage concept: Tesla reports an Austin service launch on 3 September 2026. That is a US robotaxi rollout, not UAE retail availability. Tesla's September Cybercab announcement · How Cybercab works.

Robovan, Semi and the often-mentioned "Model 2"

Robovan is the larger autonomous-transport concept shown at We, Robot; Semi is Tesla's commercial truck. Neither is an alternative to a family Model Y. Treat "Model 2" as a rumour label rather than a confirmed UAE model name: there is no UAE product page to order it from in the lineup checked for this guide.

11Which Tesla should you rent first?

  • Solo or as a couple: Model 3. Start with the everyday version and spend the difference on a longer rental if you are evaluating ownership.
  • Children, pushchair and weekend luggage: Model Y. Prioritise access, child-seat fit and boot shape.
  • Six passengers: Model Y L or a confirmed six-seat X. Check the third row and luggage space together.
  • Frequent longer drives: compare Long Range versions of 3 and Y, then choose the body that suits you. Plot the actual journey, not just a brochure range.
  • A special-occasion drive: Model S for the low grand-tourer feel, X for the doors and family-sized presence, or Cybertruck when the car is the event.
  • Buying a Tesla soon: rent the generation and trim you are considering. A week of your commute, parking and charging teaches you things a short showroom drive will not.

If you are testing whether an EV fits your life, do one ordinary day: your building, your usual route, your shopping and a charging stop. That is a much better test than spending the whole rental trying to empty the battery as fast as possible.

12How to find Tesla charging spots in Dubai and the UAE

Start with where the car will spend time parked. A charger near your home, hotel or regular stop makes electric driving a routine. A pin on the other side of town makes it an errand.

1. Use Tesla navigation for Superchargers

Enter your destination in the car and use Trip Planner to include charging stops. Open each site's details for access instructions, hours and pricing. Before collecting the car, you can also explore the Tesla Find Us map. Tesla's Trip Planner and Supercharger overview.

For a rental, ask how Supercharging is billed and whether app access will be provided. The vehicle owner's account handles charging payment, so agree the arrangement before you plug in. Rates are shown for the selected location, and congestion fees can apply. Tesla UAE charging and payment guide.

2. Use DEWA's map for Dubai's Green Chargers

Open the DEWA EV Green Charger map, then check the charger type and the location's access. DEWA's EV charging service page explains payment and account options. This is a different network from Tesla Superchargers.

3. Use PlugShare to understand the stop, not just the pin

PlugShare brings multiple networks onto a map. Filter for your connector and read recent driver check-ins: parking level, barriers, broken plugs and how to find a charger inside a large property are often the useful details. Then open the operator's app for the current session and price. PlugShare's map and driver check-ins.

4. Ask the hotel the right question

Do not stop at "Do you have EV charging?" Ask which connector, what power, whether a space can be reserved, whether non-guests can use it, and what charging and parking cost. A slower AC charger can be ideal overnight. A fast DC charger is the more useful stop when you want to continue the trip soon.

On a road trip to Kalba or Khorfakkan, save a primary charging stop and a second option before setting off. Plan the return leg as well as the outward drive.

The plug, the speed and the bill

kW is charging power; kWh is the amount of energy. A car taking 40 kWh is receiving an amount of electricity, not charging at "40 kilometres per hour". The charger's headline kW is a maximum; the car and its battery charge level also affect speed.

UAE Model 3/Y charging commonly uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. Earlier S/X and imported cars need particular attention: Tesla describes a CCS upgrade for pre-May 2019 S/X to use UAE V3 Superchargers. Have the supplier show the plug and any adapter for your exact car. Tesla UAE compatibility details.

As a simple cost example, DEWA's published rates are AED 0.70/kWh for AC and AED 1.20/kWh for DC, plus VAT. Adding 50 kWh therefore costs AED 35 or AED 60 before VAT; parking or other providers' fees are separate. DEWA rates.

13Five things to settle at the rental handover

  1. The car: model, trim, generation, seats and the exact vehicle on the agreement.
  2. The access: key card or key, app permissions and a demonstration of opening, starting and locking.
  3. The charging: connector, cables, adapters and who pays each network's bill.
  4. The return: required battery level, mileage allowance, extra-kilometre charge and any delivery fee.
  5. The controls: gear selection, indicators, mirrors, charging-port release and driver assistance before entering traffic.

Do not confuse a Tesla badge with a driverless car. Tesla's UAE Model 3 page says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not yet available locally. The Cybercab story is a separate service. UAE feature availability.

Model 3 or Y is the most useful place to begin. The best version is the one that fits your passengers, parking and charging routine. Below are the Tesla vehicles currently listed by rentalfinder.ae's rental partners.
